Game Summary / Notes

Sabinal faced the Bastrop Bears in the Regional Championship at Bastorp. The Bears were the District 29-B Champs and had a 7-3-1 record (after not winning a single game in 1951). Bastrop had defeated Pettus 27-0 in Bi-District. They were coached by M.M. (Pap) Perkins.

Sabinal came into the game having scored 227 points and allowed only 80.

The teams were evenly matched and it was a hard-fought game. Although Bastrop held on to win 19-13, there were two controversial referee calls in the fourth quarter (at least from Sabinal's perspective).

On the first controversial call, Kenneth Rochat had broken the plain of the goal line for an apparent touchdown before fumbling the ball out of the end zone. The linesmen referee signaled touchdown but was overridden and ruled a touchback. Bastrop got the ball at the 20-yard line. The second controversial call came on a Bastrop touchdown run. Per Sabinal, the ball carrier not only stepped out of bounds during the TD run, but also hit the downs marker. The metal downs marker pole was bent so badly that the crew had to slide the pole between the bleacher benches to bend it back for use.

The win gave Bastrop the Class B Regional Championship. Class B playoffs did not advance past Regional.
