Game Summary / Notes

D’Hanis narrowly defeated Sabinal 28-26 in triple overtime to capture the District 15-1A Championship. This was an instant classic in the Highway 90 rivalry and will be long remembered by all those in attendance.  Both teams played extremely hard and gave it everything they had.  Sabinal captured the district runner-up spot and will move forward into the playoffs.

D’Hanis entered the game 9-0 and ranked 10th in the Class 1A Associated Press Texas high school football poll.  Sabinal was 8-1 having won eight straight games.

D’hanis’ senior quarterback, Chance Barlow, was injured late in the 4th quarter after going 14 of 24 for 160 yards, 2 TDs, and 2 interceptions.  Chance also rushed 22 times for 88 yards.   After Chance’s injury, Clint Rothe took over at quarterback and went 7 of 17 for 111 yards and 2 TDs.

Jon Moore's 48 yard TD reception from Adan Alejandoro with 1:27 left in the 4th quarter brought the Yellowjackets within one point of the Cowboys.  Matt Medina kicked the PAT to tie the game.

D’Hanis drove back down the field and missed a field goal on the final play of regulation time.

During the first overtime period, D’Hanis got the ball first and missed a field goal.  During Sabinal’s possession, they too missed a field goal.

During the second overtime period, Sabinal got the ball first and Medina scored on a 10-yard TD run.  The PAT was blocked.  Moore was injured during Sabinal's possession on a key first down run.  During D’Hanis’ possession, the Cowboys converted on a very long 4th down reception to Cowboy receiver Nathan Young (Nathan would finish the game with 5 receptions for 95 yards).  D’Hanis later scored a TD on a 32-yard Rothe to Christian Tapia pass but missed the PAT wide left.

During the third overtime period, D’Hanis got the ball first and scored on a 5-yard Rothe to Young TD pass.  They then converted their 2-PT conversion attempt on a Rothe to Tapia pass.  During Sabinal’s possession, Medina again scored on 1-yard run.  On the 2-PT conversion attempt, Medina was stopped short of the goal line.
